CHAMPIONS No event scheduled. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ARNIE: GET LEGS, CHAMPS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Speaking after playing an exhibition round at the Australian, Arnold Palmer suggested that if American professional golfers want to be considered world class, they had better sign up to play in more of the world than they do now. "I think if there's a reflection on our really good U.S. golfers, it is that they are reluctant to travel around the world and participate in events in other countries," he said. To reinforce his point, Palmer attributed last year's U.S. Ryder Cup loss to the fact that too many Americans are not familiar with European conditions. In his prime, Palmer played in Australia, Great Britain, Africa, and Asia. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SIMPLESWING™ - THE AMAZING NEW EASY-TO-LEARN GOLF SWING! Given that topping is caused mostly by trying to scoop the ball into the air instead of hitting down and through it, tell this person to practice with talcum powder. He or she should practice by putting a small amount of talcum powder just in front of the ball, then swing so as to hit the ball first and splash the powder into the air. Any remaining talc can be used where it itches. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - VOTAW WILL RESIGN - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ladies' Professional Golf Association Tour commissioner Ty Votaw has announced his resignation effective at the end of the 2005 season. Votaw, 42, took the LPGA helm in 1999, having served the organization as general counsel since 1991. During his tenure total annual prize money grew from $36 million to an impressive $45 million this year. Adhering to the mantra "less is more," Votaw turned a shaky Tour schedule with too many marginal, tentatively sponsored events into one featuring 30 tournaments with prize money in excess of $1 million. One of his most successful initiatives was to bring an international aspect to the Tour by sanctioning or sponsoring tournaments in Japan, South Korea, England, France, and Canada, and by adding two events in Mexico in 2005. Commenting on his decision to move on, Votaw said, I feel very good about having given the LPGA all I've got, and I feel good about the results." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTEWORTHY (AFFORDABLE KNIFE IRONS/HYBRIDS) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The La Jolla Club Golf Company makes a set of sticks called Knife Irons that incorporate features designed to forgive at a price set to attract. The Knife Iron offers shallow, patented three-blade technology while maintaining a classic profile and topline. Shallow blades allow the golfer to better move the ball, according to La Jolla, and control the ball flight. Hollow core perimeter weighting makes for more forgiveness, and a tungsten ring back weight encourages higher trajectory, longer, straighter shots, and more consistency on off-center hits. The Knife Irons are available as 3-iron through pitching wedge. MSRP: $349/set. Also available are the company's new Knife Hybrids, also with three-blade technology in 3,4, and 5 versions. MSRP: $99.99. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - EMBEZZLED ALMOST $1 MILLION FROM CALLAWAY - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A former Adams Golf employee is alleged to have embezzled about $970,000 from the company over a period of 3 1/2 years, according to a document the company filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Dec. 30. Company officials have declined to name the accused, but have indicated that the person was not an officer of the company. The theft was discovered by an employee who saw something that "didn't look right." If you hold Callaway Golf stock, it does not appear its value will suffer. The company will try to recover its loss from its insurance carrier. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Quickest Way To A Better Game With the New Year...is a “new start”. Called the Hot Golf Ball, this new family member is of three-piece construction that optimizes ball speed and soft feel with a super-soft boundary layer between its hot core and aerodynamic cover. Company literature describes improvements to the Hot Golf Ball as "significant . . . over traditional 2-piece distance offerings. The new, highly resilient core -- essentially the ball's engine -- is super-fast, and kick starts a chain reaction that produces explosiveness off the clubface. The revolutionary HEX Aerodynamics on the cover also are improved, with the hexagons and pentagons optimized to reduce drag, increase lift and maximize distance." Shipping on January 15. MSRP: $32/doz. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - About your memorable golf moments:
"Two come to mind, one mine and the other a friend's. Mine: par three, tee shot in a bunker, bunker shot 15 inches from hole. miss the par putt for bogey. Friend's shot: (retiring Away Tournament Chairman for my senior men's club) 18th hole of the last away tournament of year and his last term of office, 103-yard par three, 8-iron, and he gets a hole-in-one. Not just the shot, but the circumstances, are what make it memorable." Don Weber
My cousin was a par shooting golfer, golf was his life. One day during a round of golf in Indianapolis, he hit a 3 wood about 230 yards, and his ball flew the green, hit a tree then hit a tee marker for the next hole then headed for the hole and went in. . . ." Rob Robbins (North Carolina)
". . . better than getting a hole-in-one myself was the thrill of watching my son get one, especially after I suggested he use a different iron than he had intended to use. . . ." Joe
"Following Phil Mickelson around the back nine at Shinnecock during the final round of the U.S. Open only to watch him double bogey 17. . . ." JS
". . . my hole-in-one on December 18th during our Saturday Blitz. I used an Adams 4 iron-wood to the 163 yard par 3. I knew that it was a good shot but couldn't tell where it finished due to early morning shade. . . . We looked around but saw no ball until one of the guys looked in the cup . . . my bar bill was over a $100. . . .´Don
"Had my first ever 18-hole round under par. Better yet, it was in a small tournament, so it was noticed. Also shot even par in a similar event. It's been a good year for me." CO
". . . my daughter and I got to play Whistling Straits in early November. While the weather was cold and the sun was out, the wind was . . . 50 mph gusts or better. . . . at a short par 4 named "Highland Trek," with the wind blowing hard left to right, I hit a drive that immediately left the planet right. . . . walking between some huge . . . mounds, I found my ball nestled atop one of them. . . . the wind was so strong I had to retreat back behind the base of another mound. . . . grabbed a five iron . . . got over the ball and after attempting to keep my balance numerous times, and with a "what the hell" swing thought, I hit a knockdown that immediately went straight for the flag. It took several bounces and stopped. I went on to make an improbable par. . . . From a lost ball to a great shot and par on a great course, I could have been anywhere on earth but making that shot with my daughter at Whistling Straits made it all very special." John Suess (Milwaukee)
". . . winning a rather large Salvation Army charity scramble in June. It was a four-man scramble, and my team only had three players. We shot a -15 and won 5 rounds of golf at a prestigious club in the KC area, plus many other prizes. We will be back and maybe this time with a fourth." Ken (Kansas City)
"October 11, 2004, #14 par-5 at Waterford Golf Club (a Hale Irwin design) in Rock Hill, SC. I smoked a drive that headed for a tree in the corner of the slight dogleg, designed to keep you from cutting off too much. But it cleared the tree and ran further down the incline. I was 184 yards (GPS on the cart) to the pin with a lake left of the green, traps to the right and the green breaking left toward the lake. The pin was in the middle of the green so I aimed just right of the pin and hit a five iron just like I hoped I would. It hit and ran about 12 feet right into the cup! My first and likely only double-eagle." HD - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - HE SAID - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Without a doubt it helps having a partner there. We're like a team. We go to tournaments together. It makes you stronger."
