YOUR THOUGHTS? If hybrid golf clubs help to make a difficult game more manageable for the masses, helping to lower scores, then why aren't they used more by professionals, who stand to gain even more from lower scores than we choppers? (See IF YOU BUILD IT, WILL THEY ALL COME? below.) Any thoughts? rod@golfhelp.com

These sticks are described in glowing, but not necessarily exaggerated, terms by their makers. For instance, TaylorMade describes the company's rac CBG irons as oversized with a thick top line, wide-soled and significant offset, all of which go to promote "high launch and maximum forgiveness." Adams Golf's Idea woods are "part iron and part wood" and "combine fairway wood distance with the control and accuracy of an iron. They're longer and easier to hit than traditional long irons and an incredible 27% more forgiving," as described on the Adams web site. How can a pro pass up the opportunity for 27% more forgiveness? Hybrids are showing up some Champions Tour bags. Will the PGA follow suit? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Periodically, I come across a new product that I know serious golfers will be interested in. Swing back, then return to the position described above to find the right groove. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DUI PERP ARRESTED - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In Nevada County, California, a woman driving a golf cart under the influence slammed into the rear of a car, causing her passenger to be thrown through the windshield onto the pavement of Lake Wildwood Drive. Dorothy Charlene Teague, 59, did not see a Subaru station wagon stopped to make a left turn at an intersection. She rammed It at close to 30 mph, said police. Cart passenger Jacque Wilson, 54, was hospitalized with a possible broken collarbone and pain in her ribs. Teague, who suffered small scrapes to cheek and leg, was arrested and released on $25,000 bail. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTEWORTHY (BITE GOLF SHOES) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The next time you need a pair of golf shoes consider Bites. When Thursday's rain-shortened first round resumed for Hensby with 11 holes left to play on Friday, he had only three or four balls in his bag. That proved not to be enough after giving one ball away after a double bogey on No. 9, hitting water on No. 11, and hitting OB on No. 17. It is Hensby's practice to give his golf ball to kids in the gallery after every three holes. Since his caddie had not replenished the supply before the start of play, this largesse proved to be his undoing. "It was embarrassing," he said. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - FREE Ebook and NEW PRICE REDUCTION - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PRICE REDUCTION Now Only $49 Free SimpleSwing Chipping System Ebook!! Among the offerings he describes are the PIPE Putter from Nickent Golf (strange looking, but effective), the SmartPutter from Lawrence Au of Huntley, Ill. (change its weight by adding or subtracting nickels), and the Kool Tee from Extol Inc. of Zeeland, Mich. (for those who can't bend down to insert or retrieve a tee). Read more about these and other Achenbach observations at: http://www.golfweek.com/articles/2005/opinion/columnists/3/418 07.asp - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - FINCHEM: SCHEDULE CHANGES A REAL POSSIBILITY - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said last week that thought is being given to moving the Tour Championship to September in order to make the end of the season more compelling. He also mentioned that a shorter season is one of several models for schedule change being considered. Driving the need to make some schedule modification is the revelation by TV networks that they are losing money on the last four-year contract with the PGA, which is estimated to be $950 million. Tournaments in September and October get significant TV coverage competition from football. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - About Ryder Cup team practice procedures:
"Let's get real. The Ryder Cup was set up as a "healthy" competition between countries; an effort to foster good will. Of course, the good will part has been lost in the shuffle, replaced by pride and ego. Why should anyone care when a competitor feels like he should practice or who he should practice with, practice being an effort to make ready for the competition. Unless, the purpose of that competition has come to the selling of tickets (money). And even then a competitors practice time should most definitely be his own.. . . ." Mike
". . . make the entire team practice together. This way Lehman can see who fits best together. If they don't want to do it the three days before the cup, then bring the top 15 to 20 guys together several times between now and the event in 2006 to see what will work best. . . . This is a team event so make these guys act like teammates? Maybe it will change the way they play together when it counts if they learn to play as a team." = In as close a finish as anyone could ask for, Fred Funk, after three consecutive bogeys in Tuesday's final round that could really have finished him, got an ultimate winning par on the 18th, then breathed a sigh of relief when Luke Donald missed a twenty-foot birdie putt for the tie.

= John Daly's 11 on the 18th hole in the Bay Hill Invitational was at least the eighth time he's has made a double-digit score on a hole.
= Greg Norman underwent back surgery last week and expects to resume playing within three months. **********************
