YOUR THOUGHTS?
A few days ago Vijay Singh, at age 42 and at the top of his
game, became the youngest golfer ever elected to the World
Golf Hall of Fame on a U.S. PGA ballot.  Some are saying that
the rules making possible such an appointment so early in a
career need to be revisited.  (See HALL OF FAME: CHANGE THE
TICKET PRICE?) Any thoughts?

HALL OF FAME: CHANGE THE TICKET PRICE?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
To get into the World Golf Hall of Fame when it opened  in
1998 you had to receive at least 75 percent of the vote.  When
no one  qualified in 2000, they lowered the percentage needed
to 65.  Since its inception, the World Golf Hall of Fame has
honored with memberships Annika Sorenstam, 35, Karrie Webb,
30.  In 2003, another rules change specified that even if no
candidate receives 65 percent of  the vote, the highest vote
getter will get the nod if he or she has garnered at least 50
percent.  If an HOF induction is supposed to signify an
ultimate career achievement based on a career of ultimate
accomplishments, why, some ask, is it granted before careers
are finished, especially careers that have mileage ahead of
them?  Also questioned is the what the impact would be on the
vote percentages as more people are added to the ballot.  A
watering down?  Granted that professional golf is unique
compared to other sports and their HOE requirements, there
appear to be WGHOF considerations that appear to need
tweaking.

   KNOW YOUR BAILOUT OPTIONS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Do you know where the bailout areas are on your golf course?
Do you find out where they are on new courses you play?  A
bailout area is spot you want your ball to land in if you miss
the green with your approach shot or you mis-hit you drive.
It's a good idea to know these areas when the weather is
working against you or when you are not playing your best.

   EUROPE (OPEN WILL ADMIT WOMEN)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The governing body of European professional golf has
overturned an age-old policy by voting to allow participation
by women in Britain's Open Championship.  The Royal and
Ancient powers that be broke with tradition by removing the
"men only" reference from Open application forms. R&A chief
executive Peter Dawson did point out that the question of
eligibility is still to be determined before the lifting of
the 145-year-old proscription becomes a material reality.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT (IRON STARTS FIRE)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Last week a Scottsdale, Arizona woman hit what could be called
a "scorcher"  from a transition area on the Renegade Course at
Desert Mountain.  Judy Phelan's swing with a titanium
composite 7-iron struck a pebble, causing a spark, which in
turn resulted in a small brush fire.  Phelan and her three
playing partners had begun to leave the area when they heard a
crackling behind them.  They quickly extinguished the
three-foot in diameter blaze with water from their carts' ice
chests.  "I think it must have been my tremendous clubhead
speed," said Phelan.

    GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
About the possibility of a PGA imposed "shorter" golf ball:

". . . how about limiting the height of professional
basketball players to 6'10" to give everyone a better chance,
or lets make 95 MPH the fastest that a pitcher can pitch, or
how about 300 lbs. as the heaviest a football lineman can be.
As long as there is parity in the equipment, the person who
works the hardest and has the best natural ability should win.
But then again to make it "fair" we should have all the
players use the same ball and the same clubs."  Jerry

". . . golf balls should be made to travel as far as possible.
Let the pros have restrictions . . . . Let us weekenders enjoy
the game by hitting 300-yard drives. . ."  Rob Robbins

Limiting the golf ball distance . . . on the Tour would allow
for some equalization.  Look at NASCAR or baseball, for
example.  The baseball stadiums (golf courses) are all
different, the bats (golf clubs) are all different, but the
baseballs (golf balls) are all the same.  The true best will
still rise to the top playing under more standardized
conditions.  Additionally, advances in golf ball technology
and in club technology have out grown some of the older
courses that used to be the standard of testing a golfers
skill. . . ." H. Resnick

". . . good idea to limit distance, but for pros only.  It is
ridiculous that a lot of them are regularly hitting par-fives
in two, with highly lofted irons. Cheers."  Warwick Weedon

". . . did the USGA, R & A, PGA, or anyone else say no to
steel shafts in favor of sticking with hickory ?  Graphite
shafts over steel ?  Titanium heads vs. steel ?  Balata over
gutta percha ?  Surlyn over balata? . . . now is not the time
to violate that tradition of allowing golf technology to
advance by telling ball or club makers to return to formulas
and designs of the 70's or 80's. . . . Ball travel is largely
dependent on clubhead speed, which is a function of refined
technique and strength. . . ." Leon

". . . everyone should play with the same golf ball. In other
sports they play with the same baseball, basketball, tennis
ball, etc.  Let's bring the "skills" level of the game back in
vogue." Ed

"Hope so.  While I'm not long, not even medium, a "hot" golf
ball helps me only incrementally as much as it does someone
with more power than I.  The longer the ball, the longer the
course, the worse off I am." MK

"Lord! Anyone remember Oak Hill some two years past when only
one player finished under par? Why?  Narrow the fairways, show
them what rough is like in at least two
grades, and don't forget to leave real rough on the sides and
backs of the greens, which in themselves might be made
smaller. . . ." JK

"Every time Tiger does something great, he can affect sales.
When he hit a 300-yard drive with a 3-wood at Doral, our phone
lines were flooded, so I suspect we could see an uptick now."
Chris Mike, Nike director of marketing, commenting on TW's
extraordinary 25-yard chip-in on the 16th hole at Augusta.
