YOUR THOUGHTS?
A couple of weeks ago the USGA announced it will give
consideration to the possibility of new rules to put some
brakes on the golf ball's travel ability.  The revelation was
an alert to manufacturers to enlist their participation from
the beginning in a process that may lead to change.  Question:
does this alert foreshadow an ultimate decision to impose
distance restrictions?  Despite the USGA's assertion that it
is, for now, on a fact-finding mission, is change a foregone
conclusion? (See COLUMN TO READ: MIKE STACHURA ON RULES CHANGE
below.)  Any thoughts?

COLUMN TO READ (MIKE STACHURA ON RULES CHANGE)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
According to Golf Digest's Mike Stachura, not many
manufacturers have responded to the USGA's memo asking them
for comment on the possibility of golf ball restrictions, this
despite the statement by senior technical director Dick Rugge
that "This is not a proposal, and there is no rule."  Despite
the present 320-yard limit on ball travel, the rules makers
are concerned that, among other thing, it might be possible to
make a ball that will go farther under certain launch
conditions, even though it passed the regular test.  Among the
companies approached by the USGA there was general praise for
its deliberative approach to the issue, but not all reactions
were totally positive.

   SPEAKING OF GOLF BALLS . . .
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Alex Cejka experienced some unexpected woe during the third
round of the MCI Heritage.  In fact, he never got to finish
the round -- or the tournament -- after discovering that he
was playing an illegal ball.  The ball, a Srixon UR-X, is not
on the USGA's "conforming list."  Cejka, himself, while
adjusting the ball on the 9th green, noticed that the markings
on the ball were not familiar.  At first he thought officials
would penalize him two strokes for playing the wrong ball.
But when it was determined to be illegal, Cejka was toast.  He
explained that Srixon gives him the golf balls by placing them
in his locker, and that, well, you know . . . .  He took full
responsibility for the result.

TO HIT IT HIGH (OVER A TREE?)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
We hope it never happens, but if you ever have to hit over a
tree, then land on a green, do this.  Play the ball toward
your right heel, take the club back at a steep angle, strike
the ball cleanly, and finish hands-high.  Whatever you do,
don't try to scoop the ball.  The ball should land softly,
even though you don't take a divot.

   NOTEWORTHY (KING COBRA 460 SZ)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Cobra Golf has introduced a new driver called the King Cobra
460 SZ.  What makes this club unique according to company
description is a Milled Rhombus Oval Face Insert
"strategically positioned within a larger and thinner
perimeter region to deliver greater face flex for maximum ball
speed off the largest, hottest Sweet Zone in the King Cobra
family of drivers."  This makes for the largest face area
relative to other 460cc drivers presently available.  Also of
interest are dual weights positioned low and in the back
heel/toe of the club head to precisely control the club's
center of gravity to promote an optimal launch angle and
maximum distance.  MSRP: $370

YIPS NOT ALL IN THE HEAD, STUDY SAYS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The latest skinny on the yips has it that their origin might
be in the hands, not in the head, as commonly believed.  A
study by Dr. Charles Adler of Arizona's Mayo Clinic describes
symptoms in golfers with yips as similar to those movement
disorders experienced by some writers (writers' cramp) and
musicians.  It's believed that nerve damage has a role in all
these situations.  The study does not indicate any effective
treatment for the condition.

GOOSEN AGAINST SPECIAL INVITATIONS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen weighed in last week on the
issue of women playing in PGA events.  He qualified his
thinking by adding that if a woman qualifies (in Q-school) to
play with the men, he would have no objection.  He suggested
most of his fellow players do not approve of the by-invitation
approach.  In China last weekend Goosen played a charity skins
event with Grace Park.  He said of that venue, "In a way,
people want to see the ladies play with the men. In small
events like that for charity, I think it's a good idea."

    GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
About Annika Sorenstam's receiving or not receiving credit due
her:

"It's not about Annika Sorenstam.  It 's about the bigger
picture, the bias against women's sports.  In the hierarchy of
professional golf, it appears that men's PGA golf is at the
top, the Champions Tour is just below that, and at the bottom
lies the Nationwide Tour. Hovering somewhere between the
Champions Tour and the Nationwide Tour is women's golf.  Until
women's golf reaches the stature (i.e., popularity, financial
equality, television coverage, etc.) of men's golf, Annika
Sorenstam will never equal the popularity or recognition given
to the Tigers and Phils and Vijays of the world. . . ."  Dan
Cabanas
(San Bernardino, Calif.)

If a player can shoot a 59 against a field of professionals
and be tough enough to win as many times as she has, she is
definitely one of the best. . . . The reason she doesn't get
recognition is . . . tournaments are covered so poorly . . ."
Jes

". . . Annika doesn't get more press. . . . for the same
reason that people spend all their time on the golf range
hitting driver instead of working on the scoring by practicing
pitching, chipping and putting.  America's golf fans are in
love with the long ball. . . ." Tom L.

"Yes, she's that good, but the main reason  for the 'lack of
interest' is that everyone is too preoccupied with the long
game, and the women overall don't provide that . . . Also, the
LPGA is stuck at the Golf Channel and isn't as well sponsored
as the men's tour is. Case in point: while she won the
Nabisco, the Golf Channel spent the majority of their air time
talking about the TPC -- which was rained out until Monday.  I
had a chance to follow her a few years ago, and she really is
that good."  JS

"Women golfers are like minor league baseball players. They
are just not of the caliber of men on the PGA Tour. There have
been a lot of stars in the minor leagues that couldn't make it
in the major leagues. Annika is one of them." Ken

". . . Annika is one of the greats of her sport, but she
couldn't hold a candle in direct competition to the men.  We
want 300-yard bombs, we want the drama of men who want to
compete, ala the Tiger/DiMarco match-up.  Now that was drama.
Like gladiators in the pit, like Ali/Frazier, it was down to
the wire and then some.  The passion that men play with is so
much more powerful than the way women play, there is no
comparison. . ."  Christopher "CB" Maxwell

"Just before I swing, I think to myself, 'You haven't hit a
good shot all day . . . what makes you think you're going to
hit one now?'" - Snoopy, in answer to caddy Charlie Brown's
query as to his pre-swing thought.
