YOUR THOUGHTS?
Questions keep coming up about The Players Championship.
Opinions vary on whether or not it should be scheduled at
another time of year, whether or not it should be considered a
fourth major, etc.  Now, a question has been raised by a
well-respected golf writer as to the viability of the 17th
hole at Sawgrass.   (See (COLUMN TO READ: FERGUSON DISSES
ISLAND HOLE below.)  Any thoughts?

Citing a number of reasons why this year's Players
Championship "dodged a major bullet," AP writer Doug Ferguson
zeroed in on the fabled Sawgrass 17th, most likely pleasing
the multitude of players who have so often been unable to zero
in on it themselves.  The most recent dramatic example of the
17th's malevolence was Bob Tway's taking 12 there during TPC's
third round.  According to Ferguson, had the strong wind from
left to right  been blowing at or away from the hitters,
there's no telling how disastrous the results would have been.
The main problem, he says, is that if you miss the green with
your tee shot, you can't play the ball where it lies.

   DID YOU KNOW?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
When you play in wet weather, the accumulation of water on
your clubface may fill the grooves.  Water-logged grooves will
reduce or prevent spin, causing the ball to skid on the green.
In these conditions consider the possibility that your ball
will hit then jump forward with a result you hadn't intended.

   GOLFER OWNED 3,000 CLUBS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Scottish golfer, the late Neil McLellan, was hell-bent to find
the golf club that would magically transform his game.  To
that end he purchased about 3,000 clubs he hoped would lower
his 19 handicap.  Most of them ended up in two large sheds on
his property in Dunblane.  All 3,000 golf clubs, most in
excellent condition and representing a wide range of brands,
sold in small lots at auction recently for around.$50,000.
Mr. McLellan, who was 69 when he died, took up golf 15 years
ago after returning to Scotland following a banking career in
the Far East.

   MONTY DENIED MASTERS SPOT
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Colin Montgomerie has apparently been denied a spot on next
weekend's Masters roster, much to the disappointment of some
of his European Tour colleagues.  Even though he did not
qualify as a top-50 world player, it was possible for
officials to extend a special invitation.  Ryder Cup captain
Ian Woosnam called I "a shame" that such did not occur,
especially in view of Montgomerie's illustrious career and the
fact that he has been playing well of late.  He shot a 64 in
February's Nissan Open.

Here comes another golf ball from Nike Golf.  This one, called
the Nike One Platinum, is designed to work especially well
with large-headed drivers, says company literature.  Inspired
by what they observed was the flight of a golf ball when Tiger
Woods drives it with a 460cc Nike Ignite, the company's golf
ball team concluded that he could do better with a higher
trajectory ball that does not sacrifice spin around the
greens.  Woods has been playing with a prototype Nike One
Platinum since early in the season.  Central to the ball's
make-up is a Progressive Density Core with a soft center and a
progressively harder outer shell.  And like the other balls in
the Nike line, it features three separate covers, each aimed a
accomplishing a different desired effect.  Available in May,
the Nike One Platinum will retail for $54/doz..

   HOLE-IN-ONE (WITHOUT 20/20)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
They used to kid legally blind Iowa golfer Joel Ludvicek by
telling him he had gotten a hole-in-one.  He turned the tables
on them the other day by actually getting one.  Ludvicek, 78,
used a driver to ace the 168-yard No. 11 hole at Twin Pines
golf course in Cedar Rapids.  Calling it a fluke, he said,
"It's funny how golf goes.  Most of the time I have a heck of
a time getting on the green."  Actually the ace was his second
overall, but the first since experiencing sight loss from
macular degeneration.

    GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
About the PGA players' use of hybrid clubs:

"Most pros don't use hybrids for the same reason they don't
use high lofted drivers, cavity back "game improvement" irons,
alien sand wedges and 11 woods. For those who can hit them
well (i.e. most tour pros), the 3 and 4 irons (which they
replace) are a much more desirable option as they are more
accurate, easier to control and less influenced by wind then a
hybrid. If my iron game is going well, I'll choose a long iron
over the hybrid every time."  JMS

". . . Although I believe one can shape shots with the
hybrids -- drawing, fading, stopping on the greens, etc. -- I
wonder if working the ball with long irons, especially off of
poor lies, is actually equal in performance to the hybrids. .
. ."  Frank Crombe

"Regarding hybrid clubs not being used by more PGA golfers, I
think this is only true for the PGA Tour pros.  However, most
of the PGA of America Pros -- the ones at our local clubs,
resorts, teachers and shop owners -- not only promote these
clubs, but also use them.  I think the PGA pro's ego will
always be a factor with equipment as long as they can
consistently control the clubs and balls they use. . . ."  Ron
Bliz

". . . A hard hitting pro who already produces high-arching
shots does not want moon shot trajectories at the typical
yardages these clubs are meant to duplicate.  The player would
then need to have a less lofted hybrid (defeating the added
forgiveness of this club) or accept a shorter distance than he
or she could produce with a #3 iron. . . ."
Jeff Stern  (Selma, NC)

"Unless I'm mistaken, (hybrids) are showing up with at least
some of the Tour pros. . . . There are large egos at stake
here. Most don't carry hybrids.  I don't have an eight degree
driver or a 2-iron."  MK

". . . you will start to see more of them in use in the
future, but the PGA pros will never fully buy into these
clubs."  Wayne Falcone

". . . most PGA Tour pros make contact with the ball at the
same point on the clubface each time they hit.  If this is the
case, they have no need for a forgiving club.  I have marks
all over my clubface, on the toe, the hosel, etc.  I need the
extra forgiveness." Mike

". . . We will see more and more 3 and 4 irons replaced as
guys test hybrids out.  I don't think you can put a number on
"forgiveness" but there is no question, they are easier to
hit, and ultimately more accurate." CM
