YOUR THOUGHTS?
We're wondering this week:  if the Pebble Beach Pro-Am were to
disappear from the PGA schedule, would it be missed?  (See
DOES PEBBLE BEACH STILL ROCK? below.)  Any thoughts?

   DOES PEBBLE BEACH STILL ROCK?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Some say that the Pebble Beach Pro-Am has seen better days,
the days of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, for instance, days
before the players themselves became celebrities Those were
the days before events like the Players Championship and other
unique tournaments vied for the players' attention.  Others
hold that Pebble Beach, begun in 1937, is a mainstay on the
PGA schedule, is popular with fans, and that tradition
requires it retain its place.

famous female athletes in the world, has filed for divorce from her
husband of eight years. Golfweek magazine reported the divorce was
filed Feb. 4 in Circuit Court of Orange County, not far from where
Sorenstam lives in Lake Nona. The suit has been sealed, and no other
details were available.

   CONQUER THE WIND
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Early spring golf tends to bring with it blustery days and
additional challenges to your shot making ability.  When the
wind is blowing hard enough to frustrate you, try making only
three-quarter swings with one more club than you would use
otherwise.  You'll keep the ball lower, and you'll get better
control.  And remember, swing easy when it's breezy.

CHRÉTIEN HAS GOOD DAY IN COURT
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Former Canadian prime minister Jean Chrétien was on the hot
seat last week to defend his purchase with government money
1,200 golf balls with his signature on them.  Chrétien, an
avid golfer, stated that it was common practice for traveling
dignitaries to receive small gifts from hosts, and that he
himself had received similar tokens.  Presiding Justice John
Gomery, who had in an earlier interview referred to the golf
ball purchase as "small-town cheap," listened stone-faced as
Chrétien, responding to his lawyer, produced logo golf balls
he has received from such small town personages as Bill
Clinton, Al Gore, George W. Bush and others.  Not bad, Jean,
not bad.

   NOTEWORTHY (NIKE SOFT TOUCH)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Nike's new Spin Velocity (SV) wedge series is made of 8620
carbon steel and finished with a CNC milled flat face in black
nickel.  Impressed on the club face are Nike's own U/V
grooves, a combination of  U-grooves and V-grooves the company
says contribute strategically to spin and distance control.
The milled club face is said to discourage grass, dirt and
water from getting between it and the ball.  MSRP: $99.00

PGA TOUR HEADS TOWARD $1 BILLION MARK
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Sometime next year it is anticipated that the PGA Tour will
reach $1 billion in all-time charitable donations.
Commissioner Tim Finchem has stated that  charitable giving,
over the years, has evolved from something incidental to the
Tour to something that in fact defines it.  A program named
"Drive to a Billion" was initiated last week at Pebble Beach.
A special driver made in 1938 will be used to hit a
commemorative tee shot at every tournament until the $1
billion goal is reached.  Tour players will wear commemorative
pins, and fans will be asked to buy the pins at tournaments
and online, with proceeds going to PGA Tour Charities, Inc.
The PGA made its first charitable gift of $10,000 in 1938.

COLUMN TO READ (BEMAN BEMOANS USGA INACTION)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Former PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman has fueled the
technology vs. distance fire with a letter to USGA president
Fred Ridley in which he urges the latter to act so as to
"protect and preserve the game of golf."  He states that
distance has all but eclipsed shot making, and suggests that
the upcoming generation of young professionals will all be
driving the ball 330-360 yards, "rendering all courses
obsolete."  Read Beman's letter in its entirety along with
commentary by Golf World's Ron Sirak and Ryan Herrington at:

    GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
About the long and short of Justin Leonard:

". . .  this (Leonard's win at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic)
proves that Justin is now using the right big stick off the
tee.  I wouldn't have even looked at Nike for a driver in my
upcoming season.  But that's all different now. . . ."  Corwyn
In all due respect, the courses at the Bob Hope Classic are
some of the shortest on the Tour. . . . the field did not
include some of the longest hitters.  The last day had wind,
and that is definitely to his (Leonard's) advantage. . . ."
Tom Lockner

"Concerning Justin Leonard's recent win,  I think it was Paul
Runyan who once pointed out that he had a distinct advantage
in being short off the tee.  He usually got to hit his
approach shot first.  He figured if he could stick a 4-wood
within ten feet of the pin from 210 yards, it really put the
squeeze on his opponent lying at 170 yards."  Matt W.
About the long ball:

". . . . Instead of lengthening the courses, make the fairways
tighter and shorter. . . Break the fairways up so that a Tour
pro has to put the driver back in the bag. . . . The long
hitters will have to learn what a long iron to the green feels
like. . . . ." JH

Phil Mickelson went back to hitting the ball further this year
. . . instead of hitting more fairways (2004).  He's won two
golf tournaments already . . . . So much for keeping it in the
fairway. Bob K.

"Have to say that in all the years I've been around golf --
watching, coaching, playing - over 40 years -- I've yet to see
the golfing equipment (be it balls, clubs, or whatever)  that
has made anything other than a temporary influence on the
game.  It still comes down to the person using the equipment
and their mental state about that equipment that really makes
any lasting difference. . . ."  R. Watson

    HE SAID
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
"I drove the ball a lot longer than I have in years. My driver
was going 330 or 340 this week. At the 14th hole, I thought,
`I want to chip a driver; I don't want to hit it that hard,
just want to take 40, 50 yards off of it and get it out there
about 290.'" - Phil Mickelson, following his win, using a
Callaway prototype Fusion driver at the FBR Open.
