WE'RE WONDERING Now that everyone has had some exposure to, if not total familiarity with, the PGA Tour's multi-faceted inaugural FedEx Cup chase for $10 million, it's time to ask for some opinions. Good? Bad? Wait and see? (DS PERPLEXED) Will golf fans begin to focus on points garnered, not money earned, by the pros as the season progresses? Any thoughts? rod@golfhelp.com

PGA Bob Hope Chrysler Classic Palm Desert, California La Quinta, California Bermuda Dunes, California Jan. 17-2 FedEx Cup Points: 25,000 2006 winner: Chad Campbell (-25) $900,000

NATIONWIDE No event scheduled. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DS PERPLEXED - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - When the professional baseball and football suits decided to implement initiatives like wild cards and playoffs, we said okay, we'll do our best to follow our favorites without having to consult some rabid fan, or our son-in-law. We also love college basketball, but much beyond the New England scene, we can't be bothered to follow umpteen teams in the Big This and the Little That or the Top Whatever. The same for college football. Ever see one of those office pool flow charts? We were pretty competent when it came to following the exploit of our favorites on the PGA tours. Whoever won the most money in a given year seemed like a good candidate for best player honors (I know the cons, but at least it was simple). Then along comes the FedEx Cup and yet another challenging learning curve, this time initiated by suits running a sport we love and thought we knew more than a little about. Well, we'll persevere, but for the time being, cut us some catch-up slack. Oh by the way, did we mention that we used to know something about stock car racing, too? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPECIAL REPORT FROM THE PGA SHOW - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Rod and I will be both attending the PGA show (Jan 25th-27th) this year. We plan to do some extended coverage this year. We're going to be taking a bunch of pictures and maybe even a few video clips. The Different Strokes issue after the show will have our report and links to articles and pictures.
If you're going to attend the show and you'd like to meet up and say hello send an email to joe@golfhelp.com and we'll make a schedule to meet. If you can't make it to the show but you'd like some detailed information about a product exhibited at the show e-mail me info about the product and I'll try to stop by that booth, take some pictures and do a little report.
It will be interesting to see what this years show is like. A number of industry friends who have been regular attendees have told me they're not attending this year's event so I think attendance might be down a bit. The show has been cut from 4 days to 3 days. Golf doesn't seem to be a particularly health industry right now. The PGA Show no matter the health of the industry is the one big show of the year for the industry. The folks at Reed Exposition who run the show are always helpful and do a real nice putting the show on so I am looking forward to attending. Look for a full report on the PGA Show when we come back. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GOLF ILLUSTRATED/SYMPLE SWING SPECIAL 1/2 PRICE SALE

It's about your hands during the putting stroke, and the need to feel as though they are one with, not separate from, your shoulders and arms as you strike the ball. The arms and shoulders swing back and forth to make the stroke. The hands, lightly holding the putter, just go along for the ride. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SONY DEMON STRIKES WIE AGAIN - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Last week Michelle Wie again failed to make the cut at the Sony Open. It was her fourth consecutive attempt to finish the Sony - with the same result. She made first try made as a ninth grader. One could say she's devoted a good part of her high school career to making that cut. Sadly, you could also say she has almost become a "fixture of failure" there. Each time Wie shows up to compete with the men, she does so with less fanfare and less notice by the men she hopes to equal or surpass. The whole situation is becoming more and more ho-hum. To her credit, Michelle soldiers on. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SYMPLE PUTTING Have You Seen The AMAZING NEW PUTTING METHOD that turns EVERYTHING UNDER 10 FEET INTO GIMMES? Upright Golf has taken up the same cause for golfers by developing an impressive line of easy-to-use aids for reducing repetitive stooping and bending on the golf course. These include devices to tee up, pick up, and mark your ball, among others. The company's goals: to "make golf possible for some, easier for most, and better for all." www.uprightgolf.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - RORY HELPS SOME MORE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For every birdie he scored during the past two years Rory Sabbatini has donated money to support U.S. troops. Now, in addition to his support for "Birdies for the Brave," Sabbatini has connected with Banfield, The Pet Hospital to raise money for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which helps soldiers and families affected by wars in Iraq or Afghanistan. To honor the troops in the name of their pet, owners who visit TPC courses or one of Banfield's 600 locations in the United States, the United Kingdom and Mexico, will buy a tag for $2. Sabbatini has two miniature Dachshunds, Chloe and Zoe, whose names he's had stitched onto his head covers. The Banfield project expects to raise about $500,000. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PGA HEADS (FAR) EAST - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Amid the controversy in China about the relative merits of golf, the PGA has established the PGA Golf Academy at Beijing's Bayhood No. 9 Golf Club. The setup includes a two-tier driving range, extensive practice facilities with a short game area complete with a par-3 course and two putting greens. (Weren't we wishing recently that there were more of these on this end?) Interest in golf in the Far East is soaring. More than 20 PGA pros are working there at some pretty swanky golf clubs. It looks as though, like it or not, golf is there to stay in Asia. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Eight years ago when I got back into golf, I purchased a set of metal woods, 3-11, and just used my 5 iron and up. . . . For more accuracy I gradually moved to the 4- and then the 3-irons. Now I have five Nickent hybrids, 14 thru 26 degrees. I love them. At 59, my speed is probably maxed out, but their range is from 220+ to 175 yards, and my 6-iron on down takes care of the rest. . . ." John (Keene, TX)
"Guess I'm bucking the trend. I carry more fairway metals now than I ever have. I carry 14 clubs: 3-5-7-9-fairway metals, 3 and 5 hybrid irons, 7 though L-wedge irons (6 total), driver and putter. I find that the older I get, the more I'm hitting fairway metals to get the distance I used to get with my irons. I will probably drop the 3 hybrid soon and add an 11 wood since my 3- and 5-woods can replace the 3 hybrid." G C
". . . just added one more fairway metal to my bag. Now carry six with the balance irons, three wedges, and putter. JW
". . . have irons from 4-iron to SW. Seldom use the 4-iron and don't bother with a 3-iron. Gap wedge, lob wedge, a driver, driving iron ( replacing a 3-wood), 5-wood, putter." BR
". . . carry three fairway metals, 3 and 5, plus a rescue club. In addition to a driver and irons 4 to 9, I have 54-, 56- and 60-degree wedges, plus putter. Compared to a few years back I've dropped two low irons and added an extra wedge plus the rescue club. Fortunately, even at 58 years of age I still hold an official handicap of 2 and play regularly twice a week." Leo Reuter (Singapore)
". . . My bag used to carry 3-5-7 woods with sometimes the 9. Today it has two wedges and a 3-wood, with all else being hybrids. Typically I do replace the 2-hybrid with a 5-wood and include the 3-4-5- hybrids. . . almost never carry the 3-4-5-irons anymore. I just have more confidence with hybrids. Being left-handed makes it hard to get some designs without robbing a bank." MK
". . . have a set of Ping eye 2+ irons, 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-PW-SW-LW, a putter and a driver. I use all of them. . . . am 62 years of age, and still cannot hit a fairway wood, or a utility club. . . ." Robert Duvall (Chandler, Ariz.)
". . . still prefer fairway woods to hybrids. I clearly hit them farther and just prefer the overall experience. It probably helps that I hit them fairly straight. I carry 14 clubs - a driver, 3-5-7 fairway woods, 4-iron, pw, a gap wedge, a 58* sand/lob wedge and a putter. . . . " Marty Scanlan (Springfield, IL)
". . . no longer carry a 5-wood, but my 3-wood will stay in my bag. I need it for tee shots that require accuracy, for holes that require a lay-up, and to reach the par-5s. I carry two hybrids to fill the gap between 3-wood and irons 4 through 9, and three wedges." E. Rosloniec
"Driver (10.5); Rescue clubs (16, 19 and 21); Irons (4-pw); Sand wedges (54 and 58); Putter" Al Nebolini (Clifton Park, NY)
". . . have the 3, 5, 7 TaylorMade V Fairway Metals and the 4 and 5 TaylorMade Hybrid clubs. TaylorMade 360 Driver and Ping Irons 6, 7, 8, 9, PW, SW, Putter." Chuck Walton (Tacoma, Washington)
"Since I've gotten older, I carry 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 woods; 7-, 8-, 9-irons; 3 wedges and a 48" putter. I never could hit long irons. I kept adding woods because I found them easier to hit. The long putter helped the most, cutting 5 or 6 strokes per round." Finally a driver that's easy to hit. You don't have to tee off with your 3 wood any more and lose distance. Best of all you can try it for only $20.
Recent research has proven that higher launch angles are needed for maximum driver distance. You can get the higher launch angle by teeing the ball up higher and trying to hit the ball with an ascending blow. That requires good timing and lots of practice. We suggest trying our EZ2Hit Magnum 14 degree driver. http://www.accuswing.com/magnum.html
Accuswing now offers our Magnum driver with a 14 degree loft (We also have it available with 12, degree or 14 degree lofts.)
Now you can try all this higher lofted Driver for only $20. Here's how it works. Contact us by at sales@accuswing.com or at 203-792-2812 and we'll decide the best shaft flex and length for the driver to send you. Then we bill your credit card $20 for shipping and we send the driver to try for up to 15 days. (That $20 will be credited towards your driver purchase.) This offer is only open at this time to golfers in the U.S. If you decide not to keep the driver just send it back.
EXPERT CLUB FITTING If you are interested in expert club fitting just go visit our web site and fill out our custom fitting form. The club fitting process is more than picking a model or style of club and the material it is made out of, but is also getting the details of length, loft and shaft flex correctly sorted out, along with head face height and face width, so square, firm contact with the ball can be made without having to strain against your equipment. http://www.accuswing.com/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SHORT GAME - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - = Paul Goydos birdied three of the last four holes in the final round for a 67 and the win Sunday at the Sony Open.
