YOUR THOUGHTS? The golf season is barely under way, but already there are rumblings that the PGA Tour excitement factor may need a boost. So far, despite Vijay Singh's phenomenal performance in 2004 and his first win in '05 at the Sony, Michelle Wie, not Singh, has been the focus of most media and fan enthusiasm. Such was not the case during Tiger Woods' heyday not so long ago. One Associated Press writer suggests the solution to a lackluster Tour lies with the players themselves. (See HE CHALLENGES THE PLAYERS below.) Any thoughts? rod@golfhelp.com

He suggests you can watch a tournament and see nary a smile, so intent are the pros on getting a big share of the big prize package. Like the criticism the Champions Tour got not long ago that it had no pizzazz, the PGA, says Dahlberg, is suffering from personalities disorder. He's talking not just about Vijay, whom he labels "robotic," but also about the stoic Davis Love III, the non-smiling Reteif Goosen, and any number of players you can name who, if they're enjoying themselves, it doesn't show. What he seems to be pointing to is a dry spell on Tour of players whom we can follow not just because they play well, but because they intrigue us - John Daly excepted, of course. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SIMPLESWING™ - THE AMAZING NEW EASY-TO-LEARN GOLF SWING! A good way to increase your odds by 25 percent on an uphill putt is plan to have the ball finish one foot past the hole if the putt is offline. Remember, most golfers leave missed uphill putts short of the hole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MASTERS FIELD ANNOUNCED - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Augusta National Golf Club's Hootie Johnson has announced the field of players for the 2005 Masters tournament. The list includes 54 U.S. players and 42 internationals, 14 first-timers, and 4 amateurs. A special invitation had been delivered to Shingo Katayama, who finished first on the Japan Golf Tour money list. In accordance with qualification guidelines, honorary invitations have also been extended. But wait! There can be more - the winner of the 2005 Players Championship, and at the Masters Committees discretion, the top-10 on the money list and the top-50 world ranked in the week before the tournament. The 2005 Masters will take place April 4-10. www.themasters.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PGA SHOW WILL TOP THEM ALL OM - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The 2005 PGA Merchandise Show takes place this weekend in Orlando, where 42,000 PGA professionals, retailers, and industry representatives are expected to attend. Featured at this year's bigger than ever event will be another popular Golf Demo Day, when at 120 hitting bays, two putting greens, and a short game area professionals, buyers, and media people will sample the wares of more than 60 companies. In addition, a 200,000 square-foot indoor equipment testing facility will accommodate 40 sold-out hitting bays, two putting greens, and an elevated chipping green. Fashion shows three times a day, also sold out, will preview for buyers the hot, new apparel offering, from 25 companies. All this and activities too numerous to note here will be televised by The Golf Channel from a 15-foot high broadcast tower on the show floor from 2:00-4:00 p.m. EDT, Jan. 27-29, and in a six-hour reprise on Sunday, Jan. 30. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTEWORTHY (NEW BEN HOGAN IRONS) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Ben Hogan Golf Company is getting ready to launch what it claims is its most forgiving ever set of cast irons. The new BH-5 irons are the first fully stainless steel cast construction irons ever offered by Hogan. They're extreme perimeter weighted to make them resistant to twisting at impact. A thin face and deep undercut sole creates a low, rearward center of gravity in the long irons. In the short irons, the face thickens progressively with each loft as the center of gravity gradually moves higher for maximum controllability. Look for the BH-5 irons, 3-PW, in the early spring. MSRP: $625. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Quickest Way To A Better Game With the New Year...is a “new start”. The ProLength-MAX tee is made by the country's only wooden tee maker, the Pride Golf Tee Company in Burnham, Maine. Pride Golf says that with the super long tee it is answering a need created by today's oversized drivers. The ProLength-MAX tee is the longest of the company's patent-pending Professional Tee System (PTS), which constitutes color coded tees that allow for easy identification of different tee lengths and the tees most suitable to specific clubs: the Shortee, for irons and low profile fairway woods; the ProLength, for most 3 and 5 woods and drivers up to 360cc in volume; the ProLength-PLUS; for drivers over 360cc in volume; and the ProLength-MAX, the longest tee allowed by the USGA, for today's largest drivers. Suggested for a 50-pack of the new ProLength-MAX tees: $4.99. www.pridegolftee.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - About what might be in store for Paul Casey as a consequence statements he made which were then skewed by the press:
". . . Most certainly he does not need to play here if he is so disgruntled. But you also cannot change anyone's feelings, right or wrong." JE
"Certainly an unfortunate statement but I believe him when he says it was meant in relation to the Ryder Cup. He is entitled to an opinion, and we should neither expect nor require everyone to be "politically correct." A little controversy at times is refreshing." John Handegard (Nacogdoches, TX)
"Make sure the quote is properly understood first. He didn't say "stupid." He referred to Americans an being ignorant of the facts, something a lot of people are guilty of on a lot of subjects. Otherwise, a lot of your readers are ignorant . . . of the facts." JS
"'acceptable parameters of retribution?' Like, what, shooting him? Or perhaps the sort of treatment dished out to Colin Montgomery on your friendly shores? You can hand it out, but don't like it coming back, seems to me. Tell you what, Paul will take anything you throw at him, and still come up smiling. All he has to do is remember the Ryder Cup." Geoff Schofield
". . . saw the transcript of what he said. It does not equate to what most of the U.S. press selectively quoted." Why stir it up now again? John (Wasn't it the British press that launched the problem? Ed.)
The worst in U.S. golf fans will probably show up when Casey plays. . . . I think he should have gotten down on his knees to beg . . . forgiveness. On the other hand, you just have to watch JayWalking with Jay Leno to see how unaware many of us are about current events, much less world events. I think that's part of what he was saying. Still, I say forget it and let him play without interruption. And shame on you for fanning the flames that were a mere glow."
