WE'RE WONDERING
Happy New Year!  With a new year comes new opportunities to improve.
Hence, Difference Strokes' first query of '07:  What will you resolve
to do to improve your game and/or your enjoyment of the sport it in the
next 12 months?  Even if it's a small thing (TO TRY OR NOT TO TRY), you'
ll be the better for having conquered it, even if you drop only a
stroke or two - and even if you don't.

TO TRY OR NOT TO TRY?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
That is the question. Surely we all have tendencies and behaviors on
the golf course that we know we should try to improve on or eliminate.
Sometimes these are affiliated with our golf swing, sometimes with our
temperament, and sometimes with both.  There are countless ways to make
the game better in '07:  develop and practice a pre-shot routine; take
that lesson you've been putting off; stop cursing (DS needs work on
this one); bring your sense of humor to the golf course; stop the
flying elbow; buy a round at the 19th; play strictly by the rules,
penalties and all, or learn to take a divot (DRAW A LINE IN THE GRASS).
The point is, there are things we should try to do and things we should
try not to do.  Either way there is need for resolve.

DRAW A LINE IN THE GRASS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
To get a fix on how your swing will accomplish the so-desirable divot
taking, try this.  Use a tee or other convenient pointed object to
scratch a line in the grass.  Now make a practice swing so that you
just miss the line but take a divot in front of it.  Had there been a
ball on the line, you would have hit it first and taken a divot
thereafter, as desired.

    FORD WAS GREAT FOR GOLF
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Lest we forget, with the passing of our 38th president, Gerald Ford,
golf has lost one of its greatest ambassadors and staunchest supporters.
Ford was lauded by PGA Tour commissioner Finchem for his "tremendous
contributions to the game of golf," which included frequent
participation in pro-am events that generated many dollars for Tour
charities.  He was honorary chairman of the inaugural Presidents Cup in
1994.  He was often the target of good-natured ribbing for his supposed
ungainliness, nothing was further from the truth.  He would actually
place high on a list of presidents ranked for their physical
coordination.  The sport was lucky he devoted so much of this aptitude
to golf.

    MONKEY SEE, MONKEY NOT DO
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
A recent study described in the science journal Neuron suggests why you
and I can't always repeat our ideal golf swing.  In it Stanford
University professor Krishna Shenoy states, "The main reason you can't
move the same way each and every time, such as swinging a golf club, is
that your brain can't plan the swing the same way each time."  The
researchers attempted to train monkeys to repeat simple tasks, only to
discover that they had difficulty performing the same task the same way
from scratch each time.  The study concludes that since the brain
starts to plan all over again each time it faces a task, new or old, a
repeatable perfect golf swing remains mostly elusive.  As for so-called
muscle memory, it is possible with practice to improve the body's
cooperation with the brain, but the brain will always have its way.

Expert Custom Fitting for New Driver
ACCUSWING ANNOUNCES NEW EZ2Hit™ 14 DEGREE HIGH LOFT 460CC DRIVER

Finally a driver that's easy to hit. You don't have to tee off with
your 3 wood any more and lose distance. Best of all you can try it
for only $20.

Recent research has proven that higher launch angles are needed for
maximum driver distance. You can get the higher launch angle by
teeing the ball up higher and trying to hit the ball with an
ascending blow. That requires good timing and lots of practice.  We
suggest trying our EZ2Hit Magnum 14 degree driver.
http://www.accuswing.com/magnum.html

Accuswing now offers our Magnum driver with a 14 degree loft (We also
have it available with 12, degree or 14 degree lofts.)

Now you can try all this higher lofted Driver for only $20. Here's how
it works. Contact us by at sales@accuswing.com or at 203-792-2812 and
we'll decide the best shaft flex and length for the driver to send
you. Then we bill your credit card $20 for shipping and we send the
driver to try for up to 15 days. (That $20 will be credited towards
your driver purchase.) This offer is only open at this time to
golfers in the U.S. If you decide not to keep the driver just
send it back.

If you are interested in expert club fitting just go visit our web site
http://www.accuswing.com/Club_Fitting_Form.html and fill out our custom
fitting form. The club fitting process is more than picking a model or
style of club and the material it is made out of, but is also getting
the details of length, loft and shaft flex correctly sorted out, along
with head face height and face width, so square, firm contact with the
ball can be made without having to strain against your equipment. With
a little effort on your part, you should do this quite nicely.

Along with the new year comes a new driver from Callaway Golf, its most
advanced design ever, according to Callaway.  The FT-i features a
unique 460cc square clubhead design, built on Callaway's Fusion
technology platform, which allows for the "precise positioning of
discretionary weight in the outer corners of the clubhead and . . . the
highest total inertia of any driver on the market."  Additional
versatility is had with Callaway's OptiFit Weighting System, which can
be adjusted to accommodate draw- neutral- or fade-prone swings.  The
FT-i gets unveiled at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando later this
month,  and becomes available in February.  MSRP: $625

    GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
About how to grow the game, make it more enjoyable, etc.:

". . . The solution really involves the pursuit of money and the use of
time.  Golf has several different markets to pursue relative to player
age.  Adding skill level to that mix might help.  Many courses offer
the advanced player a "challenge" and that's great.  The next step
might just be to offer the 20-handicapper a chance to make par once in
a while (that can also be a challenge).  Don't tell me that the stress
of repeated failure does not wear away at the desire to continue
throwing money at any activity.
. . . high tech means high cost. . . . get the equipment costs down.
Also, cutting that learning curve would not hurt.  Pros at tech centers
and practice facilities need to get out there and help people having
problems on a routine basis.  Advance the game by passing on a little
of what you know.  If someone wants a private lesson, charge what the
market will bear but get out there and help!  If enough people stop
playing you will not make any money anyway.
Also, there is the question of time.  Not just total time but the
quality of the time spent on the activity.  With almost all courses now
built specifically around developments that  require a golf cart,
driving from shot to shot (and then sitting around and waiting to play)
does not qualify as quality time nor does it make play faster (but it
does increase frustration and thus stress).  Build courses with a
typical green to tee distance of about 150 feet.  A lot of people
really would like to walk if they had the opportunity but fewer and
fewer courses provide that option.   I believe that walking actually
enhances quality time and could lower scores for some who would feel
less stressed by walking. . . . . golf needs to be a bit more "blue
collar" and stop trying to appeal just to those with incomes over $200,
000 (please don't tell me it doesn't).  Golf still has the image of an
upper middle class game and there are not as many of those folks per
capita as there used to be." MK

" . . . Perhaps our incredibly well-compensated pros could help. They
all speak of giving back to the game, but their idea of doing so is
designing courses that routinely charge green fees in the $100-$200
range. I am sure that if Jack or Arnie told their customers to keep
their fees within the reach of the average income earner they might be
inclined to do so. I would love to play one of their courses, but I can
play three rounds for the cost of one of theirs. I would also like to
second comments regarding decent practice areas.  In the Milwaukee area
I have to search fairly hard to find a half way decent range with grass
tees."
Bob Rasmussen (Menomonee Falls, WI)

". . . golf course operators might consider lowering the prices they
charge for play. . . . a lot of the courses offer reduced rates to
Florida residents. How about us from the northeast who have to pay for
airfare/hotel/rental car, then to pay a premium rate so the locals can
have a discount. . . . The average 18-hole rate in Massachusetts for a
decent course is probably around $50-$60 w/cart. So how often can one
afford to play during the week?   Or during the month?  I can see why
play is down."  Mark Ballantine

"Start them off young. Yes, there are programs for young beginning
golfers but there needs to be more programs pointed to the 5-year-olds (
I have a 4 year old) and up and targeting public schools rather than
private or outside lessons. Starting this young plants the seeds to
develop and enjoy the game. Golf is not only about hitting the ball it'
s about respect, self-motivation, honesty...life skills. . . ." JES (
Woodland Hills, Calif.)
". . . golf is getting too expensive for most people, and there are
some courses that I will not play because of that . . . to get more
interest in the game,  it is the normal everyday Joe that really needs
the encouragement to get involved, and also the kids . . . but most pro
golfers are in it for the money and not the game. . . ."  Gary
