WE'RE THINKING
Your humble editor had the exquisite pleasure of attending the PGA
Merchandise Show in Orlando last week, courtesy of our even more humble
publisher, Joe Davidson, patron saint of the venerable Golfhelp.com
website.  It was a mind-blowing Shangri-La for a golf lover such as we
- 1250 manufacturers and vendors exhibiting acres of wares ranging from
unique tee designs to the new square head drivers to high tech
simulators and big-screen displays of every imaginable (or unimaginable)
type.  Be sure to visit http://www.golfhelp.com/golf-tips/PGA2007.html
to see a sampling of photos and to get a sense of the event's scope,
including a picture of yours truly and some new friends.  It's a given
that conventions are a wonderful opportunity meet people and to get new
ideas.  We did just that. Ed.

While our head is still spinning from the above-mentioned experience,
we thought we'd devote this issue of DS to the entrepreneurial spirit
of those who in small ways would make our lives easier on the golf
course.  These would the little guys in the industry, trying to make a
buck, not a fortune, in the shadow of mammoth exhibitors like
TaylorMade, Nike, Callaway, etc.  Has something small or simple made
your game  better or more pleasant? Any thoughts?

If you have the problem of coming up short of the green using a 7-iron
on down, try aiming at the flag, instead of the pin.  This will help
keep you from decelerating or easing up with the club as you go at the
ball.

Ever see the TV commercial where the woman can't find her car in the
shopping center parking lot?  When she gets a small voice recorder, she'
s able to record the car's location and be reminded of it later on.
The Pocket Golf Pro is also a small, lightweight voice recorder, but
this one is designed to let you carry with you on the golf course your
teaching pro's instructional tips, reminders, and caveats.  Not just
any old recorder, this one features buttons for dividing your swing
info into categories:  full swing, pitching, chipping, sand, and
putting. MSRP: $59.95

Your drive has landed 50 yards laterally away from the cart path, and
rules prevent you from riding to it.  The fairway is dewy or wet.  The
course is new to you. You're not sure about the lie.  You have to take
more than one club with you to the ball, but you dread having to lay
the extra clubs on the wet grass.  EZ Caddie solves this problem for
you with a simple device, a lightweight, freestanding rack that when
stuck in the ground conveniently accommodates clubs or other
accessories.  No need to bend down to retrieve them. As an extra
benefit, the EZ Caddie keeps your equipment visible, making it highly
unlikely that you'll leave a club behind.  MSRP: $24.95.

(TRUESWING.COM)
When we look at training aids, we look not only at their cost, but also
at their relative simplicity.  Are they portable?  Compact?  Are they
light?  Heavy?  What problems in particular do they address? The name
TrueSwing Golf Training System satisfies for a simple to use, small,
lightweight, portable aid that doesn't bust the budget.  The term
"system" implies multiple components and suggests "complicated."  On
the contrary, TrueSwing is mainly a shaft-attached composite frame
through which you grip a club of your choice, including putter.
Swinging this club, you can check visually your hand position at six
different key points to make sure the frame is at the desired 90-degree
angle square to the ground.  The package includes a TrueGrip
abbreviated practice shaft that permits practice just about anywhere
and an instructional DVD.
MSRP: $59.95

(ALMOSTGOLF.COM)
There are practice balls, and then there are almostgolf practice balls.
Unlike whiffle balls or those egg shell thin undersized dimpled orbs,
the almostgolf Point3 practice ball can simulate real ball flight.  In
other words, the ball goes where you hit it.  It has a solid core but
weighs just 13.5 grams.  According to its maker, it feels like a real
ball when you hit it.  You can actually practice fades and draws - and
because of its limited flight potential and light weight, you wont
break anything in the process.  Buy it in white or yellow in boxes of
10 ($9.95), 36 ($29.95), or in a 24-ball clear plastic pick-up stick ($
39.95).

A MacGregor Golf press release describes the company's new offerings,
all featuring MacGregor's proprietary Cup Face 360° technology. Cup
Face 360° increases the sweet spot up to 30% by eliminating face-welds.
An all-new, 2007 MACTEK NVG2 Draw Driver builds on the success of last
year's NVG2 Tour and standard models. A precisely placed tungsten
weighting system is said to increase ball control by eliminating misses
to the right.  This same technology has been employed in the design of
a new fairway wood and a set of  MACTEK NVG2 Mid-Irons.  The cavity
back irons retain a popular classic look.  Street Prices:  Driver ($399)

Expert Custom Fitting for New Driver
ACCUSWING ANNOUNCES NEW EZ2Hit™ 14 DEGREE HIGH LOFT 460CC DRIVER

Finally a driver that's easy to hit. You don't have to tee off with
your 3 wood any more and lose distance. Best of all you can try it
for only $20.

Recent research has proven that higher launch angles are needed for
maximum driver distance. You can get the higher launch angle by
teeing the ball up higher and trying to hit the ball with an
ascending blow. That requires good timing and lots of practice.  We
suggest trying our EZ2Hit Magnum 14 degree driver.
http://www.accuswing.com/magnum.html

Accuswing now offers our Magnum driver with a 14 degree loft (We also
have it available with 12, degree or 14 degree lofts.)

Now you can try all this higher lofted Driver for only $20. Here's how
it works. Contact us by at sales@accuswing.com or at 203-792-2812 and
we'll decide the best shaft flex and length for the driver to send
you. Then we bill your credit card $20 for shipping and we send the
driver to try for up to 15 days. (That $20 will be credited towards
your driver purchase.) This offer is only open at this time to
golfers in the U.S. If you decide not to keep the driver just
send it back.

If you are interested in expert club fitting just go visit our web site
http://www.accuswing.com/Club_Fitting_Form.html and fill out our custom
fitting form. The club fitting process is more than picking a model or
style of club and the material it is made out of, but is also getting
the details of length, loft and shaft flex correctly sorted out, along
with head face height and face width, so square, firm contact with the
ball can be made without having to strain against your equipment. With
a little effort on your part, you should do this quite nicely.

    GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
About Michelle Wie:

". . . someone is encouraging Ms. Wie to keep playing against the men.
Perhaps it is Ms. Wie herself. . . . Until she can  win more than one
LPGA major and gain the mental focus skills necessary for such
accomplishment, she is wasting her time attempting to qualify for a men'
s event."  Max (Maine)

". . . she is clearly being exploited. Probably not entirely her fault.
Blame the entourage and especially the parents. . . she should go back
to basics, go to university, enjoy life as an amateur, then re-join the
professional ranks when she is mature enough to make her own decisions.
Start winning on the women's tour . . ." Gavin

". . . am sick of a girl, trying to beat the big boys. . . golf with
the girls first. Annika did, and still does , but Annika made an impact
instead of getting impacted. . . ." Lynn Owashi

If able to obtain exemptions, the more power to her.  Do I believe she
is helping her golfing career?  No. . . ."  Bill

". . . should have shown that she could beat all the competition in the
LPGA before
tackling the PGA.  I think if she had the right coaching, she would be
the female Tiger Woods.
Tiger Wood's father had the right idea and is a big reason why Tiger is
so dominant today. . . ."
Mary (Pa.)

"One must remember that golf is in the entertainment business.  As long
as Michelle is entertaining they will keep inviting her.  When she is
no longer entertaining she will be gone. . . ." WR

". . . She should dominate in her own genre and only then look for
success on the PGA Tour. . ."
TGW

"Michelle should play the LPGA and create a reputation for herself.
When she proves she can play with the big dogs of the LPGA, then, maybe,
a sponsor exemption to play with the men." John

". . . should play only on women's tour's only. . . ." RW

". . . she has to learn to walk before she can run.  Maybe she will
make it through a big boys' event one day, but I agree that she needs
to focus on making her mark on the LPGA Tour  first.  Call it positive
career management.  As for media attention, it's time to stop the
circus, and that seems to be happening." MK

"Just ignore Wie.  It is obvious the kid is being manipulated by
money-hungry adults for their own greedy benefits.  Ed F

". . . Michelle Wie needs to win an LPGA major before she continues to
attempt to make the cut at a men's event. Nobody even pays attention to
her at the men's events anymore, she has become more of a distraction
than an attraction. Shame on the PGA for allowing her to continue
embarrassing herself . . . I am all for women competing in men's events.
However, there need to be requirements or qualifying factors . . ."
Terrence McGowan

"The media treat her as any golfer shooting the scores she does with
the men when she plays against them.  On the LPGA Tour she should be
treated as any of the young ladies are, until she contends on a regular
basis."  Pete & Sindy

"Miss Wie's play in men's events shows how much the corporate dollar
controls sporting events. The US PGA Tour administrators should hang
their heads in shame.  Miss Wie is not only totally outclassed, she is
also denying a Tour player a spot in the field." Keith Jessiman (
Australia)

"This year at Sony we had a 16 year old kid with a top 20 finish and Ms.
Wie can't make the cut. Lets stop the comedy routine and let the
ladies play in the LPGA.  I think the sponsors are turning our great
game into a farce."  Leon T. Megaw (Padbury, Western Australia)

"Michelle was really interesting when she was first on the scene, doing
well on some ladies' events and driving as far as many of the men.  But
in the "what have you done lately" world we live in, she has regressed
in her results. . . It is time to let her break through before we give
her more attention, especially in the national media.  Maybe if she is
no longer a big deal, Nike will stop pushing her to play in men's
events." John (Keene, Texas)

". . . she should stay on the LPGA Tour. She hasn't won a tournament on
tour yet.  After winning five or six tournaments there, then maybe try
the PGA again."  LB

"Michelle Wie is an embarrassment to the men's tour and not much better
when it comes to the LPGA. She is overly controlled and influenced by
her father, who is no recognized expert when it comes to the game of
golf.  She should now concentrate on her studies, and we can all forget
the hype for the next two or three years. In the eyes of the media she
may be a prodigy, but to date she still has all to prove out on the
course.  So far a lot of fuss over nothing." Leo Reuter (Singapore)

". . . am soooooo sick and tired of hearing of Wie's attempts to
qualify for the PGA Tour.  The sports press that continue to pursue
this coverage are totally disrespecting those male athletes who have
paid their dues to get there and are working hard to make a name for
themselves (and a respectable living).  Stop the coverage of this
non-story." Bob (in Baghdad)
