One headline in the golf media last week read: On Tiger's tail -- rest of PGA thinks they've caught up. (See THE TIGER HUNT IS ON below.) Based on their accomplishments in 2003, a number of players have concluded they can not only loosen Tiger Woods' grip on Tour dominance, but can also replace it with their own in 2004. Any comments? rod@golfhelp.com In this issue: >> EVENTS >> THE TIGER HUNT IS ON >> YOU CAN TOP THESE >> KZ DRIVERS NOW ALLOWED ON TOUR >> SITE TO SEE (PGA.COM/VALUEGUIDE) >> NOTEWORTHY (BIG BERTHA IRONS) >> PRAISE FOR MAYS >> HE SAID >> GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU >> IT'S THE LAW (OF GOLF) >> IN CASE YOU MISSED IT - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - THIS WEEK - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PGA Sony Open Honolulu, Hawaii Jan. 12-18 2003 WINNER: Ernie Els (-16) $810,000 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - THE TIGER HUNT IS ON - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Among the players who think they can best Tiger Woods in 2004 are the obvious suspects: Davis Love III ("Tiger is the best player, but now, everybody has their share of something from last year. It got spread around a little bit.") Vijay Singh (He won more money than Woods did last year.); Ernie Els (Two wins and seven top-ten finishes in 2003.); Mike Weir (2003 Masters winner.); Jim Furyk (2003 U.S. Open winner.) And there are others who will join the hunt, like David Toms and Kenny Perry, whose 2003 seasons weren't too shabby. As for the prey and his 2003 season, Tiger says, "I won five golf tournaments and some people said I had a terrible year. If that's my terrible year, I'll take that for the rest of my career." He doesn't sound worried. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TAKE A MENTAL GOLF VACATION IN COZUMEL Join mental golf expert Dr. Brian Martin for a week of unlimited golf in beautiful, sunny Cozumel Mexico. For more info go to http://www.golfcozumel.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - YOU CAN TOP THESE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you frequently "top" the ball, look for these as the probable causes: hands not relaxed on the grip; ball not centered in your stance; knees not flexed, stance too upright; not returning hips as you follow through; lifting head and body in follow through; left arm bent at impact. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - KZ DRIVERS NOW ALLOWED ON TOUR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - On appeal by KZ Golf president Jennifer King and club designer Clay Long of Nicklaus Golf, the U.S. Golf Association has reversed an earlier decision to disallow the use of double-face drivers on the Tour. A double face driver conceals an inner face behind a conventional face, which is said by the maker to provide extra distance for golfers with slower swing speeds. The design was initially rejected by the USGA on the incorrect assumption that it was an attempt to circumvent the established spring-effect standard. What made the reversal possible was the new pendulum test, which, in fact, showed the club as conforming. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SITE TO SEE (PGA.COM/VALUEGUIDE) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you own one of the 50 brands and 2,000 models of golf clubs on the list, you can quickly determine how much they're worth for sale or trade-in by going to pga.com/valueguide. Then you can go to one of the PGA Trade-In Network member professionals to trade for new equipment, knowing that the value of your old equipment has been accurately and fairly assessed. Conversely, if you are interested in buying, say, a used driver, you have a way to find out what is a fair price, depending on condition. This is a win-win situation for buyer and seller, insuring a solid, efficient secondary market. The valueguide venture is joint effort by 3balls.com, the PGA, and eBay. www.pga.com/valueguide - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - IRON BYRON Can Teach You The PERFECT GOLF SWING! What makes these irons even more forgiving than the earlier version is Callaway's Notch Weighting Technology, borrowed from its Steelhead X-16 line. This design feature "takes weight from the center of the clubhead and repositions it to the heel and toe areas of each iron, thus increasing perimeter weighting and dramatically improving stability at impact. This combination means more accuracy on good shots and less distance lost on off-center hits -- producing solid feel and exceptional feedback on shots struck just about anywhere on the clubface." Sets of eight irons for men or women are offered with graphite ($1000) or stainless steel ($760) shafts. www.callawaygolf.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PRAISE FOR MAYS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Art Rosenbaum, the former San Francisco Chronicle sportswriter who died at age 91 (in late December), once said that Willie Mays was the most memorable athlete he covered in his 60-year career. But not for what Mays did on a baseball field. "I was playing golf with Willie in a foursome at Lake Merced," the Chronicle quoted Rosenbaum in the story announcing his death. "We came to a par-3 hole, about 200 yards, and he gets up and takes a terrific swing, but tops the ball. It skims along the ground and hits a tee box and comes right back at him at about 110 miles an hour. He catches the ball, and, with one flowing motion, puts it back on the tee and hits it onto the green. It was the most athletic feat I ever saw." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - HE SAID - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "I think the Tiger effect is not as strong as it used to be. . . . I think guys go into a week and feel, you know, if they play their games, it might be good enough." - Ernie Els - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - As the weather turns colder, this is the time to take your game indoors. ". . . have to respectfully disagree with Fred Couples about the length of the PGA season. In the Boston area we were without the Tour for a number of years. It was not due to (lack of) fan interest, but politics more then anything. If you cut the length of the season, which cities and states are going to be without tournaments?" AP
". . . Tiger plays about 15-16 times a season, and he would not play more if the season was shorter, nor would many other top players. . ." WT
". . . Fred Couples is right on. The world of professional golf will survive and be better for it. When the name of the lowest million dollar golfer is not recognizable, something's wrong." PWO
". . . I think that all players should play in each event at least 1 time in a three-year period. This would help each tournament and their charities at least once during their contract. This would place value on playing well all year long and allow lesser known players to play at earlier tournaments. If they do well the first couple of days then they will become known and be a bigger draw later in the year. . ." Glen Flanagan
". . . no, the season is not too long for me. And, for the sponsors who put up the prize money that pays the top pros very well (if they play very well), as long as I am there to support the event either on the tube or in person, I'm sure they don't care if Freddie Couples wants to take some time off. As for the charities that are supported by the PGA events, I'm sure they don't consider the season too long either. . . ." DR (Phoenix, AZ/Pembroke, Nova Scotia)
