YOUR THOUGHTS? For two weeks in a row now GolfWorld magazine has featured articles, compete with cover pictures, of LPGA players. Cristie Kerr graces the cover of the May 20 issue, likewise Paula Creamer on the May 27 front flap. It just so happens that these two women, both accomplished golfers to be sure, are also young and rather attractive. We're wondering this week just how far sex appeal can go to enhance the popularity of the LPGA Tour. How much of it, if any, should the Tour encourage. See KERR: GOT IT? USE IT! below.) Any thoughts? rod@golfhelp.com

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - KERR: GOT IT? USE IT! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In a magazine feature article recently LPGA standout Cristie Kerr, befriended by Donald Trump but shunned by many of her Tour colleagues, spoke to the issue of how better to market the LPGA to a wider audience. With an apparent keen eye toward effective business practices, Kerr suggested, among other things, that LPGA TV commentators need to be more engaging and that their medium concentrates on too few players. She observed that the public thinks of women Tour players as not "hip," "exciting," or "attractive," a perception she says is changing, but not fast enough. The outspoken rising star, who in her formative years weighed up to 175 pounds and was called "fatso" by her peers, now weighs in at a svelte 125 pounds. Not to suggest that the Tour should overdo the use sex to sell itself, she implies that in moderation it's no big deal. It won't make any difference if you always tee up at the same height. If you vary the height, so also will your shots vary. As a rule of thumb, tee your ball to a height one half a ball higher than your clubface when you rest it behind the ball, and be consistent. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TIGER BUTTERED UP ? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Visitors to the Iowa State Fair this summer will be treated the sight of Tiger Woods sculpted, full-sized, in butter. Ohio resident dairy farmer Norma "Duffy" Lyon, known popularly as the "butter cow lady," has carved a dairy cow for the fair for almost 50 years. If she gets permission from the Woods people, Tiger will become the first professional golfer ever represented in Land O' Lakes. The fair opens on Aug.11. The new NP-1 is not only larger than its earlier namesakes (380cc, 420cc, 442cc), it's more forgiving, according to its maker. Despite its size increase, the 460cc version retains the shape of a traditional golf club and the sound and feel of its predecessors. It's available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 degrees. We've read nothing but good reviews of this driver. Fellow participant, Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen, took notice of the original "horrific" lie near a 14th hole greenside bunker, then saw and reported the fact that Monty appeared not to replace the ball as close as possible to the original lie. Subsequently, was absolved from blame by European referee Jose Maria Zamora, tournament director during the Indonesian Open, but many of Montgomerie's colleagues did not concur with the decision. Admirably, Monty donated his tournament earnings to charity. In response to the furor he remarked, "Although the matter has clearly been ruled on already and hence closed in an official tournament sense, from a professional and personal perspective I was not comfortable with what I saw, (on tape) and feel that I may have replaced the ball inaccurately, albeit unwittingly." On a golf course in Krogaspe, a pair of the long-legged flyers have been nesting on golf balls, hoping to turn them into little storks. Ornithologists have speculated that the birds are satisfying their natural urge to procreate after somehow being foiled from employing ordinary means. " . . . Ernie is full of himself on this one. It takes a lot of gall to expect tournaments to make Gestapo type demands of the paying public to make him comfortable over a shot. Ask people who can't behave to leave, or require them to give up their mobiles. Maybe we could do away with paying spectators, and Ernie could play the Malaysian open for $5,000 and a free ride to the airport? . . ." MK
". . . Etiquette . . . is at the core to this game's greatness. . . . we must prevent the 'getting noisier society' from degrading our game. Most great things tend to mediocrity. Golf' deserves our steadfast and dedicated shepherding. It's worth it. . . ." Karl M. Fischer
"A resounding yes on quiet for the players. They deserve nothing less. The game is difficult enough, and the proximity to spectators is a privilege. . . ." Jim Cardelia
"Give me a break with the noise thing. These overpaid prima donnas in their 20's and 30's and even in their 40's and 50's should be able to concentrate if they are truly professionals. Consider a 15-year-old gymnast on a 6" beam doing blind back flips while the crowd is going wild. Come on guys....are your braces too tight?" EJ
"The time honored tradition of complete silence should go the way of honest politicians. Yes, if things are very quiet, and on the backswing someone shouts, that would affect the swing. However if there is constant noise and cheering it absolutely wouldn't affect the swing. If a baseball player can hit a 90 mile an hour fastball over the roar of the crowd, how can't someone hit a stationary golf ball? . . . ." Ken
"Since you mentioned bowling (DS, #276), and I am PBA member . . . Flash photography and cell phone usage is banned. But yes, it does happen at times. We still have crowd noise, but that really is no distraction. For a time on the TV show the audience was encouraged to be noisy all the time and that was easier for the players than the silent periods with the occasional noise. Even though many spectators are rude, I see no need to allow more distractions. I feel that cell phones should continue to be banned and unruly fans educated or removed from the premises." John Handegard (Nacogdoches, TX)
"Most certainly the "focus factor" is and will always be part of the golf game. Having to use sight, muscle memory, and timing needs a lot of concentration. . . . the tour players are in this for the money and deserve the etiquette of the game. . . ." JE
". . . fans in other sports boo, call the players names and even throw things on to the playing field . . . I am for the quiet respect that the fans have for golfers, and I would support keeping the status quo. . . ." Lloyd
". . . It's really about common sense and etiquette, and golf must continue to be one of those last bastions." John Suess
"Common courtesy dictates no yelling or screaming, or movement that might distract the player. . . . Absolute silence? No, that should be left behind with the wood-shafted clubs. . . ." LT
Cell phones on tournament courses. I think phones should be banned. They are banned for the US Open next month here in Pinehurst. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be banned during other PGA tournaments. They are distracting enough in public restaurants and to have a member of your 4some repeatedly on a phone or Blackberry during a casual round is very irritating. Unless you're a brain surgeon expecting a call, leave 'em in the car. Bill
". . . the etiquette of 'quiet, please' is not an imposition on any crowd that appreciates the game. As for cell phones, they ought to confiscate them all and melt them down into golf trophies." DR (Pembroke, N.S./Phoenix, Az.)
About "hitting down" on the ball:
"Telling a player to hit down on the ball when it is on the turf seems to be a popular Band-Aid, but it is misleading and misses the problem entirely. Players who try to scoop the ball or pick it clean simply have never learned how to make a proper golf swing. That may not be the player's fault. I searched for the correct instructions for the classic golf swing for 35 years before figuring it out for myself. . . ."
