YOUR THOUGHTS?
Europe’s Ryder Cup officials appear to be concerned about the
possibility that some American players may not want to practice with
their teammates at the K Club in County Kildare, site of Ryder Cup play
in 2006.  (See AT ISSUE: RYDER CUP PRACTICE below.)  Any thoughts?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The Europeans want to make sure that the best players on the US Ryder
Cup team, say Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, will play alongside their
colleagues when it comes time to practice for the 2006 event in Ireland.
In other words, they want our hot shots to be on site on the days
when fans pay substantial fees to watch the players get ready for the
main event.  In 2002 at Belfry, Tiger Woods disappointed some by
showing up before dawn to put in a practice round before anyone knew he
was there.  US officials let Phil Mickelson practice on a course other
than Oakland Hills, much to the dismay of American fans in 2004.
Ultimately it will be captain Tom Lehman who make the call in 2006.

    DON’T HOOK (STAY BALANCED)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Among several reasons for pulled or hooked shots is arm movement so
fast that the body cannot keep up.  If this is your problem, remember
to keep your whole body in balance from the ground up, shifting your
weight from one foot to the other as it becomes necessary to support
your arms on both back- and forward swings.  Don’t let arms get ahead
of weight.

    NOTEWORTHY (BEN HOGAN WOODS)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
If your drives have a tendency to draw, fade, or go straight, you can
buy a new Ben Hogan C-S3 (Custom Shot Shaping System) driver to
complement that inclination.  The C-S3 allows for the discretionary
positioning of three weight cartridges in the 400cc titanium design
driver head to accommodate a draw, fade, or neutral bias.  The company
has also introduced the Big Ben C 455 Fairway Woods.  Their heads are
of stainless steel and incorporate a Speed Slot design to increase club
head speed through improved aerodynamic efficiency.  According to Jamie
Bosworth, vice president for sales and marketing, “The new C 455
Fairway Woods are by far the most versatile, forgiving woods to date.
The combination of advanced stainless steel construction and the Speed
Slot gives them great stability and workability, making them the best
performing club choice for players of all skill levels.”  MSRP: $399 (
C-S3); $225 (C 455)

    WATCH CABLE CAM AT SAWGRASS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
At the Players Championship this weekend NBC Sports plans to introduce
“Cable Cam” coverage to the fabled par-3, 17th hole at Sawgrass.  The
Cable Cam is a camera that will travel along a wire stretching from the
left of the tee box to the edge of the water behind the green.
Depending on the tautness of the cable, the camera can be placed at
ground level or as high as 60 feet in the air. Capable of being quickly
positioned at an infinite number of spots along the cable, the camera
will track shots from angles never before possible.  The advantage of
such coverage, according to executive producer Tommy Roy, is that
viewers are able to see golf shots from beginning to end in one
continuous picture.

    TIGER CONTEMPLATES EARLY RETIREMENT
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Tiger Woods said the other day that his foundation the Tiger Woods
Foundation means more to him than playing golf, the act that made the
charity possible.  Woods made the statement in partial answer to a
reporter’s question about how long he expects to play in the Masters.
"Not as long as people think,'' he said.  Woods, as three-time Masters
winner, has a lifetime exemption to play there.  Planning a retirement
earlier than many players of his caliber, Woods said, "I'll definitely
quit the game earlier than people think. When my best isn't good enough,
I'm walking.''  He admitted wanting to break two records in the
meantime: the 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus, and 82 PGA Tour victories
by Sam Snead.  Woods stands at eight and 42 in those two categories.

    PROS GET JOY RIDE
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
NASCAR auto racing competes head-to-head with televised golf on
weekends for most of the season, but the two popular sports partially
joined hands following Miami’s Ford Championship early this month.  Top
PGA players were invited by Dale Jarrett Racing Adventure to experience
firsthand the thrill of driving and of being driven in genuine Nextel
Cup racecars. The publicly traded (DJRT) driving school prepped the
golfer/racers on points of safety before encouraging them to take the
wheel.  Then all who opted were treated to the fastest car ride of
their life by Ford sponsored NASCAR champion drivers.

    A STORY ABOUT SIDESADDLE PUTTING
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
BY KARL Higham
I have been using the sidesaddle putting technique probably longer than
anyone alive today... ...dating back to the 1950's . During that time I
have built and tried dozens of putters with an astounding variety of
putter heads, shafts, bends and shafting positions.  None of these were
quite able to afford the natural feeling of having the stroke hand
directly over the ball and still conform to the USGA rules. Heel and
center shafting also has the effect of placing the shaft a little to
close for a comfortable takeaway resulting in occasional pulls due to
an outside - in stroke in order to avoid the feeling of possibly
hitting your leg. Recently, I stuck a long double bend shaft in a right
hand TM 45 head backwards. Being a left hander, it fit me. I was able
to line this putter up much easier and the stroke was completely
unencumbered by my leg. It felt much more balanced and wanted to stay
on line all by itself... particularly during the release through the
ball. The alignment properties of the head were in full view without
interference from the shaft.  A few adjustments to the shaft bends for
the best balance and a virtual magic wand was born.  It was a true
epiphany!  My next challenge was to incorporate a putter head designs
that would best compliment the shafting and take even more advantage of
this unique idea.  From the very first stroke I was convinced I had
found the easiest and most accurate putting system in the world...
PUTTING SIDESADDLE WITH THE COMFORTZONE II is my best contribution to
this little "game within a game" to date.

     GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
About appearance money and its perceived threats to Tour integrity:

"Hey, Money is money and it’s the American way.  If players can command
appearance fees then cheers to them!  They earned it!" Matt J.

“Hello?  Aren't these "professional" golfers?  This tradition goes back
as far as Walter Hagen for heaven's sake.  The fact is every event
wants the "cream of the crop" if they can get them.  Money talks and BS
walks. . . .”
Christopher "CB" Maxwell

“So much of a golf tournament on television is advertising, almost to
the point that some of the events are unwatchable. I guess it pays to
get the big boys into the tournament to keep people glued to the TV . .
. .” Ken  (Kansas City)

“. . . the fees to show up should be eliminated.  If they do not want
to go to the party, stay home and let someone else who wants to win
show up. . . .”  Patty

“. . . if these tournaments keep upping the ante, who gets hurt?  The
fan. The turnips get squeezed to pay for these guys to play.” EB

Yeah, right.  As if the top players don't make enough money already.
They've become somewhat like the CEO's of America's top corporations
greedy.”  GWV

A bad thing.  Given the many responses to last week's question
regarding the number of events, many of your readers cannot, in good
faith, support the practice.  If for no other reason, it donates
playing slots to the already
rich and famous while cutting out of the picture a guy just trying to
hang on.  IMG appears to be a typical big money outfit that believes
money will buy anything, including names and reputations. . . .” MK

The practice of paying appearance money to attract the top players is a
slippery slope. . . . Appearance money allows players such as Tiger to
not play in 17 (?) tournaments last year - that short changes the golf
fan and the cost of appearance money ends up being added to the price
of tickets. . . . I can hear the top golfers complain that this will
force them to work harder - just like every other wage earner in the
world.  The top golfers earn more in a week that most earn in a year or
more.  The laws of market economics work in golf as well.”  Jon (Surrey,
England)

“It happens in all other major sports; football, basketball, etc.  Some
players get paid just to sit on the bench others give different levels
of effort from game to game.  If that gets the top players to an event,
then so be it.  Take it out of the prize money if necessary.  It will
make for larger crowds and better sponsors, giving more money.  The PGA
gives such a large portion of that to charity (far more than all other
pro sports). Everyone wins.” Curtis Queen (Newton, NC)
